The show is taped at Sable Ranch in Canyon Country, Santa Clarita, California, about 40 miles north of Los Angeles. The show holds a "TV-PG L" rating for mild language by participants and some crude humor. Syndicated reruns of Wipeout are airing on truTV, and TBS. Season Six started on ABC on May 9, 2013.

Each week, 20 contestants compete in a series of challenges in an attempt to win £10,000. These challenges are based in large pools of water or mud and generally involve large assault courses that participants must cross. Total Wipeout is a licensed version of Wipeout, the Endemol show that originated in the United States in 2008, with the name slightly altered to avoid confusion with the BBC version of the earlier game show of the same name. On 29 March 2012, BBC confirmed that they are to axe Total Wipeout after its sixth series. The Daily Mirror reported that a BBC spokesperson said: "After four very successful series of Total Wipeout, and one series of Winter Wipeout, the BBC has taken the decision that the next series, due to transmit later this year, will be the last." The remaining 10 episodes from Series 5 began airing on 18 August 2012 and ended the show’s 4-year run on BBC One before 2013.

Unlike the original version which is a one-hour episode, the Quebec version is divided into three 30-minute episodes, issued during the week to "increase the suspense".
Zor Ka Jhatka: Total Wipeout was an Indian reality game show aired on Imagine TV. The show was based on the American reality show Wipeout. It was hosted by actor Shahrukh Khan and co-hosted by Saumya Tandon. The show consisted of a series of obstacles which the contestants must clear to move on to the next round. If a contestant fails to complete an obstacle, he is said to be wiped out. It was organized in Buenos Aires, capital of Argentina, while the end-game bits were shot with anchor Shah Rukh Khan at the Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai. The show started airing on 1 February 2011 at 9:00 pm and ended on February 25, 2011 with Kushal Punjabi as the winner taking home Rs. 5,000,000, while German-Polish model Claudia Ciesla was the runners-up by 51 seconds.
